CHURCHILL TO GREENLAND VIA NUNAVUT

FROM CHURCHILL TO KANGERLUSSUAQ

We begin our arctic adventure in Churchill where each year thousands of Eco Tourists come to experience the marine, boreal forest and tundra of this magnificent region of Canada. This northern port is the home of beluga whales, many migratory bird species as well as the king of the Arctic- the Polar Bear. After cruising Hudson Bay, where you can enjoy watching seabirds, seals and migrating whales, we will spend the next days traveling to picturesque towns to enjoy local culture as well as guided expeditions. From the Nunavut capital, Iqaluit on Baffin Island we cross the Davis Strait to reach the lovely town of Uummannaq, 590 kilometres from the Arctic Circle in northern Greenland. Cruising south, we reach the calving glacier of Eqip Sermia and Ilulissat, ‘Iceberg Capital of the World’. We take a guided walk to the Unesco-protected Icefjord, with a wealth of optional excursions by boats, planes or helicopters. In Qeqertarsuaq (‘The Great Island’) on Disko Island, we experience ‘kaffemik’, a cultural get-to-gether over coffee, before continuing south to Sisimiut and entering Kangerlussuaq, ‘The Great Fjord’, our final destination.

GREENLAND TO CHURCHILL VIA NUNAVUT

FROM KANGERLUSSUAQ TO CHURCHILL

Navigating north from Kangerlussuaq along Greenland’s old inter-coastal routes, we indulge in the multitude of natural wonders. We will experience many classic highlights during our voyage, including “The Iceberg Capital” of Ilulissat and the nearby UNESCO-protected Icefjord, the beautiful basalt mountains and the amazing calving glacier of Eqip Sermia in Disko Bay. The glacier is one of the most active in Greenland, with a high likelihood of seeing and hearing ice cascade into the ocean below. Leaving Greenland and the town of Uummannaq behind, we cross the Davis Strait to reach Iqaluit, the capital of the vast Inuit Nation of Nunavut (‘Our Land’) in Northern Canada. As we slip between Baffin Island and Labrador into the mighty Hudson Bay, we will visit some of the picturesque Inuit settlements of this rugged tundra. We will stop in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island, known worldwide for its wealth of Inuit drawings, prints and soapstone carvings. Coats Island (Coral Harbour) seasonally hold 30,000 falcons, murres, and gulls in its vast nesting cliffs. We can also expect to see a concentration of walrus at the cliff base, as well as polar bears, seals and whales before arriving in our final port of call - Churchill.
